418 I Am a Teapot by Edgar Scott

418 I Am a Teapot is a dystopian science fiction. It explores a world where people exist in a constantly connected virtual world, either by choice, birth or punishment. They spend their lives in the virtual space while implants control control their physical bodies to do either lower of the low or dangerous jobs. They are called staffs and the staffing companies rent them as labor commodities.

One such staff, identified as 418 meets with an accident (exception) and comes out of it with consciousness. As he tries to understand this world, he forms a strong relationship with his boss Brian. The story is narrated from the POVs of these two characters (mostly) as they try to understand each other’s world and help each other out of their respective distressing situations.

How did it make me feel?

I always enjoy reading dystopian science fiction novels. The sheer imagination of the authors of what could be and what the world as we know it could look like in future, blows my mind. I absolutely loved the concept of this book. Relinquishing the rights to your physical body in order to indulge in the virtual world is fascinating and horrifying at the same time. I loved a chance at experiencing this world with I Am a Teapot.

Coming to the characters, I liked both Brian and 418, their interactions and the bond they form eventually. However, there were two other characters that I would have loved to know more about. I wanted to see their story arc and how they may have fit in to this whole narrative.

I also would have loved to know a little more about this world, outside of 418 and Brian’s lives. A little flashback to the past from where it all started. Or, a little more about someone who is may be planning to become a staff. Because, at one point Brian worries that his son may want to become a staff. What pushes people to do it and what is their thought process? That would have made this world a little more transparent and comprehensible.
