The Informants by Scott Nickerson
The Informants is an action-packed debut thriller by Scott Nickerson.
Toro, a deadly cartel assassin is called upon by El Jefe, the leader of the Cartel de Culiacan, the biggest drug cartel in the world. Along with Toro, El Jefe has gathered about 50 people including his right-hand man Juan, the second-in-command of the Cartel. Juan announces that El Jefe’s wife was murdered two weeks ago, poisoned while she ate with their 11-year-old daughter. He instructs everyone in the room to find the culprit. El Jefe is offering $10 million dollars to kill the waiter who served his wife that day and additional $10 million dollars to identify who instructed the waiter to carry out the deed.
Meanwhile, the DEA agents in the United States and Mexico are working with the informants continuously, in an effort to seize the drug and the drug money and to bring the Cartel down. During one of the operations, Toro has a confrontation with the DEA agents Ana Lucia and Rodrieck Chambers. Following the chaos that ensues, Toro kidnaps Ana Lucia and blackmails the DEA, threatening to kill her unless they reveal the person responsible for ordering the murder of El Jefe’s wife.
And thus begins a deathly gamble of truth and deception at both ends. A race to collect the rewards at one and a race to save the life of the DEA agent at the other.
How did it make me feel?
The Informants was as thrilling, full of twists and turns, ruthless and goosebumps-inducing as I had expected. I was anticipating a good time with this story mainly because author Nickerson has worked for decades as a DEA agent. Consequently, I was very much looking forward to knowing the inside workings of this world. And The Informants does not disappoint.
The pace of the narrative is perfect, with no dragging details of what you don’t need to know and a sharp, precise account of what you do. I loved the character development of the main characters as well. With a bit of information on each of the characters, Nickerson is successful in creating a bond between the readers and these characters, which makes them last longer in the reader’s memory.
I am very excited about the fact that The Informants is the first one in the upcoming series!
