The Shadows by Alex North
The Shadows starts around the circumstances that imply a terrible crime in Gritten Wood. Twenty-five years later, Paul Adams returns to Gritten Wood to visit his sickly mother. While Paul tries hard to put behind the memories of that crime, he fails quickly as he realizes that the town is now hit with the copycat crimes. However, it is not as simple as it looks. These crimes seem to connect to the original crime in bizarre ways. Paul finds himself in the whirlwind of past memories and present horrors when he himself becomes the target.
How did it make me feel?
When I picked up The Shadows, I had somewhat low expectations from it because I had read many lukewarm reviews stating that it comes short compared to Alex North’s previous novel The Whisper Man. So maybe because I wasn’t expecting much, it really came as a surprise to me. I completely enjoyed it. It is a haunting, creepy, dark, and disturbing coming-of-age story.

I do agree that The Whisper Man was better in some ways but I almost enjoyed The Shadows equally. I love how North is able to keep the readers guessing until the end. Reading both The Whisper Man and The Shadows was a fantastic experience for me. Read my review of The Whisper Man here.
