Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One is set in a dystopian world in the year 2045. The world as we know it today seems like a distant dream to Wade Watts. He lives with his aunt in a trailer.  The society is gripped by terrible economic, social, and environmental setbacks. His only solace from these horrible circumstances is a virtual reality game called Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation (OASIS). Wade devotes his life to a worldwide Easter Egg hunt in OASIS, winning which would lead to inheriting a massive fortune of the game’s creator, James Halliday.

The game consists of puzzles and adventures massively influenced by the 1980s pop culture. People all over the world get obsessed with the hunt. However, a year passes, and no one seems to be able to figure out the first level of the game which involves finding a key. Soon the excitement dwindles and people start to forget about it until one day Wade is successful in getting the first key. He makes friends, becomes ‘socially’ active and life seems to be getting better for Wade because of this game. However, he soon realizes that the competition is inducing real-life impacts, and winning seems more important than ever to survive.

How did it make me feel?

Ready Player One is the first of its kind for me and I absolutely loved it! It was so interesting, it really came as a surprise to me. At first, I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did but it constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. This one will get your imagination running wild!

I am absolutely impressed by the fact that this is Ernest Cline’s debut novel, and thus, I am very excited about Ready Player Two.
