All Our Shimmering Skies by Trent Dalton

All Our Shimmering Skies is a beautiful historical fiction by Trent Dalton. It takes us into the life of an orphaned girl called Molly Hook and her magical view of the cruel world around her.

It is 1942 and the war is coming to Darwin, Australia. When Molly lost her mother 6 years ago, she left her with a gift from the sky. A treasure map that belonged to her grandfather. A map that leads to Longcoat Bob, who she believes has put a curse to her family. When Japanese drop bombs on her hometown, Molly sets out on a treacherous journey with unlikely friends; Greta, an actress and Yukio, a Japanese fighter pilot.

How did it make me feel?

All Our Shimmering Skies has to be one of the most beautifully written books that I’ve read. The writing is so brilliant, Trent Dalton has easily become my favorite and I know I am going to be looking into more of his works.

The three above mentioned characters and their relationship is so beautiful. It’s a tear-jerker for sure. You feel so many emotions for them, especially Yukio. I am going to remember him for a long time. Molly’s relentless belief in the nature and magic is heart-warming but I felt like it tends to be a bit tiring at times. But I realized later that it only serves the story better.
