The Boy in the Field by Margot Livesey
The Boy in the Field follows along the journey of three siblings; Matthew, Zoe, and Duncan, from a point in a time that has a significant impact on each of their lives.
One day, when their father fails to pick them up from school, the three siblings start walking home. Zoe spots something in the field and runs towards it while the two brothers follow. A flash of red that appeared to have been poppies turns out to be a bleeding, unconscious boy. They call for help and the boy’s life is saved. However, in the aftermath of this event, all three siblings’ lives take a turn.
The oldest, Matthew, becomes obsessed with finding the person who attacked the boy. He partners with the victim’s brother to search the town for any clues that will lead them to the assailant. Zoe searches the faces of every man she comes across, knowing that someone among them attacked the boy, and is now may be searching for other victims. The youngest, Duncan, who is adopted, suddenly decides to find his birth mother. Over the course of time, all three siblings tackle a number of complications in their journey. The Boy in the Field is a story of how all of them go on to shape their lives with a mysterious force behind them that came with finding the injured boy in the field.
How did it make me feel?
I liked it. The three siblings are unique in their own way and I felt like I wanted to know more and more about each one of them. I was, however, expecting it to take more of a mystery/thriller turn as the story progressed. I was a bit surprised to find that it was ultimately, a classic coming-of-age story, given the title. But undoubtedly, it is a good story and I would recommend it.
