Dead Beckoning by Mike Cobb
Dead Beckoning is a historical mystery fiction based on a true story by Mike Cobb, set in 1895 Atlanta.
On a rainy Friday morning, Baker Bass leaves his home to open his tobacco store as he does every day. Unlike the other days, however, Bass’s journey is cut short on Ivy Street, where he lies with a bullet hole in his head.
While there are equal speculations of suicide and murder, no evidence is in sight to prove the either. A loyal team of Police Chief Arthur Connoly and captain William Manly set out to find the cause of death. They soon realize that this case is not as simple as it looks. With corrupt detectives within the force and an unscrupulous commissioner, they seem to take two steps forward and one step backward with every attempt. Bass’s own secrets from his past make the matter more complicated.
How did it make me feel?
The Narrative
I always love a fine who·dun·it and Dead Beckoning did not disappoint! A rich historical references combined with a chilling mystery, it was difficult not to get drawn into this story. Author Cobb is successful in making this an immersive experience for the readers from the very beginning. And, even better, this pace does not falter throughout the book.
The Characters
The trait depictions of the principal characters were masterful. However, I did feel like some of the characters that seemed key to the storyline eventually faded out as the story moved forward. I cannot say much without giving spoilers, but I would have liked a little more context on the behavior of one of the significant characters that give this narrative its core.
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely, yes! Historical fiction and mystery coming together make for some of the most delightful reading and Dead Beckoning is definitely the one to go for if you’re a fan of these genres.
