How did it make me feel?
The Narrative
I felt like L. Ron Hubbard’s narrative style in “Battlefield Earth” is a double-edged sword. The sheer scope with a vast array of subplots and world-building is just epic. The vivid descriptions of the Earth’s desolate landscapes, alien technology, and human resistance movements are nothing short of immersive. Hubbard’s attention to detail draws readers into the story’s post-apocalyptic world, making it feel vivid and tangible.
However, I did find the novel’s length and the occasionally dense prose a bit daunting. While the meticulous world-building is impressive, it can be overwhelming for those seeking a quicker-paced read. The story’s pacing can be uneven, with periods of intense action followed by moments of slower development. Despite this, the book’s sweeping narrative has its moments of exhilaration, keeping readers invested in the overall story.
The Characters
The strength of “Battlefield Earth” lies in its well-crafted and diverse set of characters. At the heart of the story is Jonnie Goodboy Tyler. Jonnie’s character is the embodiment of resilience, determination, and the undying human spirit. I was so rooting for him as he transforms from an ordinary human into a charismatic leader, leading the charge against the alien invaders.
The novel also features a range of intriguing supporting characters, each with their unique qualities and motivations. Terl, the cunning and ambitious Psychlo chief of security, stands out as the primary antagonist. His complex personality and motivations add depth to the narrative, making him a character worth watching.
Would I recommend it?
Battlefield Earth is a monumental work of science fiction and is composed of vivid elements of a post-apocalyptic world, so even just for that I’d recommend that readers try it. If you’d describe a book as epic, this one would definitely fall into that category.
