The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Set on the premises of World War II France, The Nightingale takes us into the lives of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle. After the death of their mother, their father leaves them on their own. Owing to the differences in their nature, both sisters go their own way.

Vianne is married to Antoine and lives is a small town named Carriveau with her daughter Sophie. Isabelle, on the other hand, is rebellious and is bouncing from one school to another, frequently getting expelled. When the war finally comes into their lives, Antoine is drafted. The German Officers capture Vianne’s house. Isabelle leaves Paris to come to Carriveau where she joins the French Resistance. In the wake of war, both these sisters put their lives at stakes, making their own paths to destroy the Germans from within.

How did it make me feel?

Wow! What can I possibly say to describe the beauty of this book? For me, the best books have always been those that make my heart ache so much so that I physically feel it. The Nightingale was just that. The story lingers in me and thus, has easily taken a place on my favorites.

During one of the worst periods in history, in a country choked by the war, The Nightingale shows us the spectacular forms the unshaken hope, strength, love, and the family can take. It’s the story of sacrifice, an assurance of how being on the right side of history is never the wrong choice, and a promise of how love never fails, no matter what. This book made me cry my eyes out. Hannah has beautifully structured the story, in a way that will leave the readers constantly seeking for more.
