Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim
Set in the 19th century Virginia, Yellow Crocus is a story of Mattie, an enslaved wet nurse to Elizabeth, a newborn to the Wainwright family who is a slave-owning plantation owner. As soon as she is born, Elizabeth is handed over to Mattie, who is forced to leave her own infant son behind at the slave quarters. The story revolves around these two lives :
Elizabeth (Lisbeth) has everything except the love she seeks from her parents, sibling, and her friends. Everybody around her seems distant and everyday life seems to be an orchestrated parade that sets her life goal to nothing but nabbing an heir from the most prestigious slave-owning family.
But not with Mattie. Lisbeth learns everything there is to learn in life from Mattie. She finds a mother and a friend in Mattie. Mattie, whose life lacks the basic necessities, becomes a source of love for Lisbeth. How this unconventional bond has impacts on both of there lives, even decades later, is the story of Yellow Crocus.
How did it make me feel?
I loved this book. I am a big fan of Historical Fiction and thus I really love the stories that revolve around the lives that lived during the extraordinary periods in human history. There is so much to learn from them. As far as Yellow Crocus is concerned, I would’ve loved more of Mattie’s POV in the story, I felt like it would have been great to know more about Mattie’s emotions and know her more. Nevertheless, this was a beautiful read. I’m glad I found it.
