We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Author Adichie has beautifully crafted We Should All Be Feminists which primarily raises a question: What does it mean being a feminist? Being born and brought up in a world that expects a woman to act a certain way, women are not only bound by the patriarchal culture of the society but also by their own tendency to shape their lives around the dos and don’ts. Adichie explores seemingly ordinary acts, both by men and women, in everyday life that contribute to making this divide deeper. She also brings to attention the way we raise our children. How we shame a boy for showing weakness and admonish a girl for being loud. She shows us how we have the opportunity to end this inequality by letting the children flourish, as she puts it beautifully, ‘without the weight on gender expectations’.

How did it make me feel?

“Yes, rape is wrong, but what is a girl doing in a room with four boys?”

A society where the above statement is passed casually during conversations. A society where feminists are defined as perpetually angry women who hate everything and anything related to men. Sound familiar?

Feminism is defined as the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. So, my question for you is this: If you are okay with the above statement regarding rape, what is a definition of Humanity to you? And if you are not okay, how are you not a feminist?

I think this book holds a lot of significance, especially today when the term feminism is increasingly being discredited. I have a few more books from Adiche on my to-be-read. What other books have you read from the writer? Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments.
