A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses is a tale of an incredible journey of a girl into the menacing yet alluring magical world of faeries.
Feyre is a nineteen-year-old huntress living with her father and two sisters in a small cottage by the forest. After her mother’s death and her father’s misfortune with the business, the responsibility rests upon Feyre to look after her family.
The humans of this mortal world have been hearing for generations the legends of Prythian, an immortal world that lies to the north of the forest, where the lethal faeries live. This has made hunting in the forest extremely dangerous. But the poverty and hunger leave Feyre no choice.
One fateful day in the forest, she is about to hunt down a doe when suddenly her eyes fall upon a wolf. While uncertain of whether it’s indeed a wolf or a faerie in a wolfskin, she finally gives in to her temptation of the meat and the skin and kills it.
Her worst fear is realized when another faerie from Prythian lands up on her door and demands a life for a life. As a sentence for the murder of a faerie, Feyre is dragged away to Prythian to live-out the rest of her life. In the lands feared by the humans for centuries, Feyre now has to struggle to keep herself alive. But little does she know, that the world she is entering is far from her perception. The dreaded Prythian is more dangerous than her wildest imaginations and yet it becomes the only world for her.
How did it make me feel?
This book was certainly one of the most anticipated books for me and I’m glad to say, it delivered. The world that Maas has created is absolutely fascinating. I really, really want to visit it, or better yet live in it! There are not many books that made me feel this way about a fictional world.
The characters are very compelling. There is a certain mystery to every character that attracts you to them. With some of the scenes and the character arcs, I was practically feeling giddy! While with other YA fantasy reads, I wished that I was young when I read them, with ACOTAR, I actually felt that I am young! And that was the greatest strength of this book for me.
