Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
Lock Every Door is a page-turning thriller set in an upscale apartment located inside the building named The Bartholomew.
Jules Larsen is on the verge of homelessness. After being laid-off from work and catching her boyfriend cheating on her on the same day, Jules is desperate to find anything that could help her get back on her feet. Due to which, she responds to a questionable ad in the newspaper for an apartment sitter. When she arrives to attend the interview, she realizes the apartment is located in the Bartholomew, a building that had intrigued her and her sister Jane since childhood.
They used to read a book called Heart of a Dreamer, a romantic fantasy based on the Bartholomew, and used to dream about living there. The dream, which is finally becoming a reality for one of the sisters, as Jane has now been missing for eight years. However, as beautiful and dreamy the Bartholomew looks from the outside, it is as dark and sinister as it can get on the inside.
Jules starts realizing something is off as soon as she moves into the apartment. However, the prospect of an unbelievable amount of twelve thousand dollars for just three months of living in a luxurious apartment makes her ignore her reservations. But when a series of seemingly independent events start emerging as a pattern, Jules realizes that nothing is as it seems. From disappearances to the dreadful past of the building, Jules soon finds herself in the web of deceits, and emerging harmless on the other side seems like a far-fetched dream.
How did it make me feel?
Wow! Lock Every Door is a kind of thriller that makes me realize why I’m gradually falling in love with this genre. This book is everything you want in a thriller. It’s fast-paced with a LOT of twists and turns. The author is extremely successful with character building. I love it when I can almost see the characters in front of me while reading the scenes and not all books are successful in doing that. I flew through it and there was never a moment when it got lukewarm for me. This is my first Riley Sager and I am pretty sure I will be reading more from him.
