And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

And The Mountains Echoed tells us the story of Abdullah and Pari, a brother-sister duo living with their father and stepmother in a small village of Afghanistan.

Being born into an impoverished farmer family, the pains of poverty constantly thrashes a beautiful and inseparable bond between Abdullah and Pari. Abdullah is ready to do anything for his sister’s happiness and Pari is immensely attached to Abdullah. One day, they take a trip to Kabul with their father and uncle, and their lives are changed forever.

Over the course of the story, Hosseini delves into the lives of many different characters across many generations and continents. These characters represent different parts of the world and Hosseini shows us how the aftermath of war has shaped these individuals. Some of these characters, in one way or the other, eventually complete the circle of the story that started over half a century ago in a small village in Afghanistan.

How did it make me feel?

This book is an absolute roller-coaster. I am a big fan of Khaled Hosseini’s writing. As good as the book is, I do have to confess, that I was craving for the story to focus more on Abdullah and Pari rather than other characters. I wouldn’t mind sacrificing a couple of other characters and their stories for it. But again, that’s not to say that I didn’t like it. It is an absolute gem.

Hosseini has always focused his stories around family, love, pain, hope, and the repercussions of the war on these entities of life. He intends his characters to touch the heart of his readers and he is almost always successful in doing so.

If I had to rate Khaled Hosseini’s books, The Kite Runner would be my absolute first. It is my all-time favorite book. Second, would be A Thousand Splendid Suns, and then And The Mountains Echoed would be my third. I am yet to read Sea Prayer. You can get them all on Amazon.
