The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

The Kite Runner is a heart-shattering story of Hassan and Amir, set in Afghanistan, 1975.  Amir is the son of an affluent man in Kabul. Hassan is the son of their servant. They’ve been together since their birth, Hassan being born only after a year after Amir. They were nursed by the same woman, took their first steps on the same lawn in the same yard, and spoke their first words under the same roof. They’d been inseparable, running along the streets of Kabul together, not knowing a moment without each other’s presence.

When Amir wins a local kite-fighting tournament that he had been dreaming of for so long, Hassan sets out to run the last kite for his friend. The events of that afternoon change their lives forever.

A devastatingly beautiful story, The Kite Runner is a powerful narrative of pure friendship, love, and the connection that is beyond human understanding, set in the backdrop of the Afghan war. It is a masterpiece that will break your heart into million pieces.

How did it make me feel?

To say that The Kite Runner is my favorite book, would be an understatement. This book means so much more than just a piece of literature to me. The way this book has pierced my heart, no books have been able to do so yet. This was my second time reading it and I know that it will not be my last.

Hassan stays with you forever. Since the first time I read this book, which was about 11 years ago, Hassan has never left me. Amir teaches you so much about life. For every other character in this book, you cannot move on without feeling a range of emotions. I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil it for you.

There are a million reasons why I would recommend this book to everyone, whether it’s someone who is just starting their reading journey or someone who’s an avid reader. Even if you’re not a reader at all, if there’s one book you’ll read, make it this. You will not regret it, at all.
