Hungry Hill by Eileen Patricia Curran
Hungry Hill is a story of one woman’s attempt at navigating through life when her husband suddenly dies and life, as she knows it, changes forever.
Gracie Cavanaugh is grieving her husband’s sudden death when her great-aunt Maggie invites her to live with her at Hungry Hill. She shares a special relationship with Maggie so she can’t deny her when she is desperately in need of her help. Thus Grace packs up her life and her two dogs and heads to live with Maggie.
While there, she meets Maggie’s 29-year old neighbor Matt and begins exploring a new relationship. Hungry Hill tells a story of how Grace makes her way in this new life of hers, juggling her relationship with Maggie and her illness and well as her relationship with Matt.
How did it make me feel?
When Grace took that road trip that begins this journey, I was ready to roll with her! That’s a credit to good writing on the author’s part, especially for a debut novel. Once she got settled in Hungry Hill, I felt like I was waiting for something to happen that never came. I was genuinely invested in her adjustment with this new life, but I felt like some event or something was needed for me to connect with this character. I didn’t really know Grace for me to relate to her emotional ups and downs. This is reflected in her relationship with Matt as well.
Whom I LOVED was Maggie! She is a no-nonsense badass and I really enjoyed all the parts where she was present. I loved her relationship with the dogs, Ellen and Stogie. And I LOVED the dogs!! I longed to know more about Maggie’s life than Gracie’s.
Besides the characters and story, what I love the most is the cover of this book! I would have bought it just for the cover! 😀 It is a posh addition to my bookshelf and I am loving it!
