Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
Sharp Objects is a psychological thriller by Gillian Flynn. Camille Preaker is a Chicago-based reporter with a difficult past. The death of her young sister and the strained relationship with her mother had a deep impact on her. She spent some time in a psychiatric hospital in Chicago after years of self-harm.
Shortly after her discharge, Camille is assigned to cover the murder of two teenage girls in Wind Gap, Missouri, which is her hometown. She is hesitant but finally decides to go because she is in need of a good story to sustain her career.
As she starts gathering information on these murders, she also starts reconnecting with her estranged mother and her half-sister. She starts uncovering the truth, however, she comes face-to-face with her own demons in the process.
How did it make me feel?
This was a difficult read in terms of the subject matter. It was dark, goosebumps-inducing, and at times very difficult to process. However, in terms of the reading experience, this was an excellent read. I couldn’t put it down! I had read Flynn’s Gone Girl before this and had expected a lot with that one but to be honest I liked Sharp Objects better. Mostly, with regards to the emotional continuity and narrativity, I found this story more well-rounded.
Talking about the thriller aspect, it keeps hitting you with such twists and turns over and over again, that you can hardly catch your breath. And that is what I LOVED about Sharp Objects. Flynn provides you with just enough information about all the peripheral characters for you to speculate but she keeps taking the readers into different avenues and leaves them breathless. I definitely recommend it to thriller lovers.
