The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo tells the story of a Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo. Now 79 years old, Hugo has decided to publish her life story and has invited an unknown journalist, Monique Grant to carry out the task.
Hugo’s team reaches out to Monique, a reporter for Vivant magazine, to interview Hugo. Monique is not sure why she was chosen but she is excited and accepts the opportunity. She is under the impression that she is interviewing Hugo for a breast cancer charity event where she is actioning some of her famous gowns. However, when she goes to Evelyn’s apartment to meet her, Evelyn reveals that she is not interested in doing the interview for Vivant. Instead, she wants Monique to write her biography, which will be a life-changing opportunity for Monique.
While Monique is still stumped by why Evelyn chose her, she is absolutely fascinated when Evelyn begins telling her story. She starts to feel a strong connection with Evelyn. But the more Evelyn dives into her deepest and darkest secrets, the more Monique wonders about what possibly could have led Evelyn to pick her. When the story eventually comes to a conclusion, Monique realizes that she has a startling connection with Evelyn’s life.
How did it make me feel?
Before I get into it, I want to say that for some reason I thought this story would be dark. I think when I heard the title, I conceptualized it to be something like Ruskin Bond’s Susanna’s Seven Husbands.
So. I was a bit surprised when the story progressed, but I found myself wanting to know more and more about Evelyn Hugo. I liked the storytelling, pace, the overall essence of the story. But what I liked the most were some moments that came out with such force that they made me tear up, almost unexpectedly. I loved how vulnerable Evelyn Hugo was and how perfectly Reid was able to portray all the shades of this character with ease.
When it comes to other characters, I was not very attached to or curious about them, except for Harry Cameron. He is probably my favorite character in this book.
Overall, I liked the story, just not loved it probably because I had anticipated it to be something different. But I loved the way the story came to an end. And also, loved some of the lines so much, that I know I’ll remember them for a long time.
