The Maid by Nita Prose
The Maid is a murder mystery novel by Nita Prose, published on January 4, 2022.
Molly Gray is a twenty-five-year-old hotel maid. She grew up with her grandmother who recently passed away. Molly struggles with social skills. She misreads the common social cues, misunderstands people’s intentions, and is incredibly trusting of the people around her. This leads the people to take advantage of her in many ways and she always ends up hurting. When her grandmother was alive, she was her rock. She would always help her understand how things will eventually fall into place. But now that she is alone, she finds it very difficult to make sense of her environment. Molly is also incredibly neat, punctual, and organized. She loves her job as a maid. She can’t wait to get to work every day and return the hotel rooms to a state of perfection, as she puts it.
Her life is overturned one day when she enters the suite of the wealthy Charles Black and finds him dead. Molly, being the one who found the dead body coupled with her unusual personality finds herself as a prime suspect in the murder.
How did it make me feel?
The Narrative
I was really enjoying the book up until about the half. It was the anticipation that kept me going. The way that the narrative was set up, I really thought there will come a shocking twist and it will kick this story up several notches. But unfortunately, that didn’t happen. I kept waiting, but nothing unexpected or unanticipated came. It was clear from the very beginning who the good guys/bad guys were. I was really waiting to be proven wrong but in vain.
Audiobook Narration
Narrator: Lauren Ambrose
One positive thing is that Lauren really did an amazing job with the narration. She embodies Molly’s character and you actually feel like you’re directly hearing from the protagonist. That was awesome! To be honest, that was one of the things that kept me going because she maintained that intrigue that the story demanded.
The Characters
Because there was nothing unanticipated about any of the characters, I can’t say there were any noteworthy characters. The characters are forgettable.
Would I recommend it?
Um..I’m not sure. All I can say is this would not be the book that’ll come to my mind when I think of good thrillers.
