Final Cut by SJ Watson

Final Cut is a psychological thriller that tells a story of blurry memories, a shady past and a haunting present of a small fictional town called Blackwood Bay in England.

Alex is a young filmmaker. After a couple of not-so-great ventures, she is getting a last chance at her career. Her boss Dan wants her to make a movie based on a community, struggling with a dwindling population and a economic downturn. When a mysterious postcard arrives from Blackwood Bay, Dan does some research and decides this is the location for their movie.

However, this is not an ordinary place. Alex has her darkest secrets buried in Blackwood Bay, from which she has been running for as long as she can remember. Now that she is going back, how will Blackwood Bay treat her? Or even worse, what may she find there?

How did it make me feel?

It gripped me as soon as I started it, which is a good sign for a thriller. However, I felt like it just took forever for the story to come to a significant turn. But when the twist came, it was shocking and I wasn’t expecting it. So, it was a pretty nice surprise, given the pace of the book. It bumped my overall rating a bit. But I really wished it was a bit more fast paced and had a bit more plot intricacies. A few significant pieces of the story seemed conveniently placed. That was a bit of a bummer. I felt like it could have been played out a bit differently.

Final Cut tells a good story overall and keeps you invested in it. If you like a slow burn thriller, this one is for you.
