Beneath A Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
Based on the true story of Pino Lella, Beneath A Scarlet Sky is a fictional narrative of courage, love, pain, and resilience during World War II. An Italian teenager, seeking every moment to be of use to his country, continuously faces strong dilemmas. Author Mark Sullivan tells us a story of how Pino juggles these dilemmas to establish rights and wrongs, his family, his love, and his duty towards his country torn by World War II.
Pino Lella is a vibrant teenager enjoying the prime of his youth around friends, foods, and girls. He remains heedless of the war and its impacts until one day the bombings destroy his family home in Milan. He soon finds himself leading the Jews over the Alps, helping them to escape through a treacherous and life-threatening journey.
Pino parent’s on the other hand are worried about their son’s safety, so they force him to enlist in the German army to be safe. As reluctant as he is, Pino joins the army. When nothing seems to be going right. Pino comes across an extraordinary opportunity that may help him carry out his resistance from within his position. However, the path is not easy and there are many sacrifices awaiting Pino in this journey.
How did it make me feel?
This was a wonderful read. Author Sullivan is successful in establishing a flow that keeps the readers engrossed. Occasionally, I wished some parts had less sensationalization while for some others a few nail-biting opportunities were missed. Having said that the character development is excellent. I was able to connect with the characters easily and that had a great impact on my reading. If you like war fiction, I definitely recommend it.
